The National Survey of the Education Workforce results strengthens UCAC’s findings on teacher workload
UCAC welcomes today’s statement by the Cabinet Secretary for Education on the findings of the National Survey of the Education Workforce. We support carrying out a similar survey every 2-3 years as a means to see how the situation develops within the profession over time.
“The results of the survey are of no great shock to us as a Union indeed the results strengthen UCAC’s findings on teacher workload and a survey we carried out on Recruitment and Retention within the profession (March 2017), but the evidence is important,” said Elaine Edwards UCAC General Secretary.
“UCAC feels we have a Cabinet Secretary that we can work with for the good of our members and education in Wales as a whole, this was something she emphasized to our members at our annual conference at Gregynnog Hall over the weekend. While welcoming today’s statement, it only confirms what UCAC has been saying for years, something must be done to lessen the workload of teachers, lecturers and lecturers in further education,” said Elaine Edwards.
“We welcome that the Secretary hopes to deal with teacher’s workload ‘as a priority.’ 88% of those who answered the questionnaire noted that they could not manage their workload within the directed time. This reflects our own finding where 90% said the same thing,” she added.
“UCAC stated recently that Education in Wales is at crisis point as so many wish to leave the profession. Today’s statement only emphasizes our view. The Government needs to act now to lessen curricular overload, the burden of bureaucracy and internal and external accountability that is an integral part of education at the present time.”
