Marking translated exam scripts is unacceptable

In response to the news that Edexcel exam board intend to translate exam scripts from Welsh to English in order to be marked by non-Welsh-speakers, Rebecca Williams, UCAC education union’s Policy Officer said  “UCAC believes that marking translated scripts is unacceptable.

“We know that translation from one language to another involves a degree of interpretation and judgement – it isn’t a precise, mechanical process. That means that it’s impossible to guarantee that a translation correctly embodies the precise meaning and nuance that the pupil intended. This could lead to misinterpretation and marking that is unfair and inconsistent.

“If an exam board is unable to cope with the demands of offering a qualification in Welsh, then they should not be offering that qualification in the first place. We are convinced that if schools were aware that the board’s intention was to mark translated scripts, they would not have chosen to follow that board’s specification.”
